Simple Joys of Summer

Lately I’ve been experiencing the simple joys of summer. The food is effortless and clean. The activities are full of passion, beauty, and merriment. I have a house guest who is inspiring me in many ways. Life is feeling wonderful. This is why I take summer session off from school. I just don’t get to feel this ease during the school year, and I know once I am finished with school that I’ll not have the same opportunity. So, I’m going to keep enjoying it all while I can. Here are some pictures (with captions), to let you in on the good times.

I’ve been trying out a new look. I’m loving the 1940s-1950s fashions and style. It’s classic, and lovely, and a lot of fun when I am not struggling with my waist length hair.

I made these beautiful cupcakes for our July party. They’re basically vanilla cupcakes with crème chantilly (sweetened whipped cream). Fresh Maui strawberries and some blueberries garnish the top.

Leftover whipped cream and berries became dessert the next day. Freshly grated nutmeg added another layer of flavor, and elegance, to such a simple treat.

Another party dessert was a homemade rhubarb pie. I used a pie crust recipe from Jenn Cuisine’s website. It was amazing. I received a compliment on it from just about everyone. Filling the pie are fresh Maui rhubarb and strawberries. The rhubarb came from a friend’s home garden. It does get cold enough upcountry for rhubarb!

The band Devin is in played a gig at Steel Horse in Wailuku this month. They were outstanding. The audience loved the show. Toes were tapping, people were dancing, and some people sang along. They’ll be playing there again soon.

My friend Naima performed her poetry at Body Alive Yoga in Wailuku on First Friday. She is an amazing poetess. I was impressed and moved.

Devin played with The Troublemakers at Body Alive Yoga during First Friday. They were a lot of fun. I filmed their show for Devin’s mom who couldn’t be there.

Finally, I had a lot of fun with this curl I got into my hair. It was amazing. My hair has never been so curly. I don’t even know if it was this curly when I had my hair permed when I was a pre-teen. I definitely am going to do this again.

  1. Hi,
    I’m Willow.
I too am a strawberry blonde. I am celiac and allergic to soy and corn, and lactose intolerant, among others. I never eat spinach, cauliflower, cabbage or anything from that food family, it’s better that way. I don’t know if you are aware that most celiacs are also lactose intolerant. Recently I decided to give Lactaid a try because I was pretty sure milk products were bloating me and giving me cramps. It changed my life.
I live in Haiku and if you would like to come by and chat sometime, that would be great. Always Willow :) [email protected]

    1. Thanks for your comment Willow. I’ve been considering trying to start up a meet up group for people with celiac disease and gluten intolerance. It sounds like it’s something you’d be into, so I’ll keep that in mind. :)

I too used to drink Lactaid products, but I’ve switched to non-dairy beverages like coconut.
