Summer Time & The Living is Easy

I have been enjoying having so much free time. Not having to focus so hard on any one thing has been a relief to me right now. It’s something I know I won’t have after I graduate and enter the working world again. So, that’s why I am trying so hard to enjoy it now. Here’s a little bit of what has been going on. There will be a second post with more photos as I have so much to share with you all.

First, Devin and I went hiking with a friend up in Poli Poli State Park. It was a drizzly day up there, and so my fingers were frozen and pink by the end of our hike (4 miles!). For a picnic lunch afterward I made some delicious quinoa salad, but I also made some cute marbled tea eggs. They didn’t have a lot of flavor, but the color was splendid.

Gardening has been going on here a lot lately. Sadly, the heat killed my lettuce. I’ve planted some more seeds, so I’m going to try them again. It just may be the very wrong season. But, my tomato plants are all doing very well, as are my cucumbers, beans and zucchinis. My water testing gadget is awesome. I bought it for less than twenty dollars at Ace Hardware. It has really helped to keep me from over watering, and under watering, my plants.

I’ve also been attending Maui Makers meetings lately. It’s been great to catch up with people. I love to geek out with everyone, and I love to learn new things. I’m one of two women who are in attendance now, but I know there are more geeky girls out there who should come out and make something. Me, I’m more into crafting so I take along my knitting. However, I’d love to learn how to use some of the other tools on site. Currently the maker space is going through some growing and changing, so the actual making of stuff is going to have to wait a bit until the process is more complete. But, on the way to the meeting I took a couple shots of cool old buildings in the area. One is a school, and one is a church that is now in the middle of high cane grass by the sugar mill. I’ll have to bust out the good camera and photograph them sometime.

Okay, that’s enough for this post. In my next post there will be more food photographs. Stay tuned!

  1. Amanda, sounds like you’re really enjoying a touch of summer. I enjoyed unplugging for a long time in the mountains… Swimming in a pool surrounded by Pine trees was magic. Bunnies, chipmunks, squirrels, blue jays made the picture complete. Back on Maui, my garden is thriving. My lettuces took off. They liked semi-shade. Now there’s so much I need to give it away before it bolts in the heat. I met the Maui Makers guy at TedXMaui and love what they’re up to.

    1. Wow, that really sounds like a nice getaway Marilyn.

Yes, I’ve learned the lesson of the lettuces. Too much direct sun and they burn right up.

Yes, Maui Makers is awesome, and Jerry is a lot of fun. If you happen to be out on a Thursday night, stop by sometime!
