Dear Vita Coco,
I wanted to give another coconut water a shot since I’ve been sticking with one brand lately simply because it is so delicious and comes in a version with coconut chunks floating within it.
I picked up an overpriced tetra pack of plain Vita Coco coconut juice at Foodland after a long hot day over a griddle at culinary school. I expected a deliciously sweet, yet refreshing beverage I am used to when I took my first sip.
Unfortunately, the taste was repulsive. Maybe repulsive is too strong of a word since I did drink the whole thing due to dehydration, but it wasn’t a very pleasant experience. I found it to be sour and bland all in one sip. I checked the expiration date after my first two sips to be sure I hadn’t bought an off coconut water. Nope, that wasn’t the problem. Any odd ingredients? Nope. Just plain coconut juice.
So, sorry Vita Coco, but it’s clear why you have so many flavored versions of this beverage as you need to cover up the disgusting taste of your plain coconut water. I won’t be buying this again.
Aloha,
AmandaonMaui
Yes, I did send this letter to them.
Note: I am a nerd, and I live with THE NERD (Devin) so we did some nerd sleuthing. Both Phil and Katrina, in the comments, are astroturfing. This means they work for the company, either directly or as contracted employees, and are trying to make the company’s product sound better when there are posts like mine which make the company’s product look bad. They pose as actual people giving actual comments on a product, but they are simply employees. Obviously Vita Coco feels the need to make people think their product is good by using this tactic, which is a nasty tactic to me. I don’t support companies that do that. Maybe their product would be better if they spent their money on making their product taste good instead of spending it on astroturfing.

just a minute ago i cracked open a tetra pack of this stuff too and gagged, it was digusting! i had to spit it out in the sink, i couldnt even bring myself to swallow it. i bought a regular and a peach mango flavor, and the fruity one isnt as gross but still not tasty at all, i just took a sip and i dont think ill finish this bottle. id rather have the goya canned stuff with the chunks of coconut in it, it might not be as “natural and pure” but at least it doesnt make my tongue shrivel!
I like the Amy and Brian’s(especially the one with pulp) as well as C2O( which is a bit less expensive).
What are you talking about? It’s coconut water, it tastes amazing. To be honest, if you enjoy eating coconuts, there is no way you cannot enjoy Vita Coco. You probably just don’t enjoy coconut flavored things. That’s cool, and you are entitled to your opinion, but attacking it like that is unnecessary. My family and I absolutely adore Vita Coco, and we have it all the time. I even keep some in my office fridge. So while you may not like it, countless others love it. It’s refreshing, healthy and one of the healthiest drinks available! I would recommend to try it for themselves and not listen to such a negative and one-sided review.
Actually, coconut is my favorite food. I have other brands of coconut water that I enjoy including Amy & Brian’s and C2O (as I said to the other commenter), but this brand was pretty awful to me.
Of course readers are allowed to establish opinions of their own. I never said they shouldn’t. Go out, try it, and if you like it then that’s great. Obviously some people like it because it’s still on the market.
I haven’t met a person who tried vita coco and didn’t like it– its amazing. The health benefits and the taste combined make it one of the best products I keep in my fridge, and I throw one in my purse every day and finish it within a few hours at work. so easy!
Astroturfing.
