My domestic duties have called me to take care of them before school starts on Monday.
So, today I made yogurt. Well, actually, I’m still making yogurt. It should be done by dinner time (but, we’ll be out to eat with a friend). I received more raw goat milk, and fresh eggs, from the Nerd’s dad. He’s the family homesteader. He and his wife have an amazing property with goats, chickens, and a wide variety of fruits and vegetables all tended by hand. The weather is beautiful as well, so I’m not surprised they like to spend a lot of time out of doors.
I found a terrific video over at Helldelicious.com on how to make yogurt. There’s also a nice text walkthrough of the process with added details.
I started my yogurt on medium low, and I lost my attention to it for only a moment and went to about 190F instead of 180F(Making yogurt is just one more reason for owning a candy thermometer). So, pay attention, and don’t burn your milk. The electric kettle quickly provided nice hot water to warm the jar. I almost completely forgot to add the starter, so I had to reach my hand into the jar to add the starter and give it a stir.
For my yogurt starter culture I used some Cascadian Farms yogurt with live cultures. It was fat free, so I’m hoping that isn’t going to affect the creation of the yogurt at all. I only needed a tablespoon, so I ate the rest of the plain yogurt with a little honey. Yum!
If all is successful, I will have 4 cups of goat milk yogurt in a few short hours. I’m so excited, and I hope it turns out well.
If you’ve never made yogurt before, find some milk that isn’t ultra pasteurized and get to it. You’ll save a lot of money by making your own yogurt, and you’ll have something to be proud of and show off!
