Today I prepared to go to work, and I drove all of the way there to find out that I didn’t need to work. No, this wasn’t a problem of me looking at a schedule incorrectly, it was just a lack of communication.
So, I came home, ate lunch (mmm leftover chili & Mary’s Gone Crackers), changed into my boro boros (work clothes in Hawaiian Pidgin language). I have a desk that I’ve been refinishing for 4 months. Okay, so most of the time I haven’t touched it. I’m finally at the stage of polyurethaning the desk, and I had the time to put towards that project.
After working out in the garage, with the door open of course for ventilation, I was hot.
That’s where the watermelon comes in. It’s summer, and that means it’s hot, and when it’s hot we all want something cool and refreshing. Over at Like Merchant’s Ships, Meredith made watermelon juice drinks with mint in them. I have quite a bit of watermelon in my fridge, so I may have to make some.
The watermelon you see at the top of this post is a locally grown, farm stand bought, watermelon with seeds intact. The flavors are so bright, and the color is gorgeous. I don’t hate watermelon seeds in my watermelon. I think they’re crunchy and delicious. Besides, seeds are supposed to be in our fruits and vegetables. They’re supposed to be there to be planted and grow more watermelons, or grapes, or lemons. We didn’t always have Monsanto and the other seed producers selling us little packets of genetically modified seeds.
Recently the Nerd and I sat and removed the seeds from the flowers of lettuce plants. They’re such tiny little seeds, and it was pretty fun work (oxymoron?). I could definitely sit around removing the seeds from flowers while watching a movie, or listening to an audio book. It’s going to be quite rewarding once my garden goes in.
I haven’t always liked watermelon. When I was a kid I thought it was bland, and dry. I think I was eating bad watermelon. Thankfully a lot of watermelon is grown right here on Maui. A dear friend of mine is a produce supplier, and she has literally been selling a couple tons of watermelons every week to grocery stores on the island. The people of Maui are all over getting fresh watermelon. The lawn maintenance man for our property has begged me to give him some watermelon once we have ours producing. I most definitely will.
It’s too bad that watermelon season is so short, but we don’t need it to be year round. Honestly, nobody needs watermelon in the coldest part of the year. That’s why the earth grows things seasonally. We get what we need, when we need it.
Oh, local carrots are back in season. More on them later. They were great in last night’s dinner.
Slurp up some watermelon in a toast to the seasons with me!
